Dr Dunham obtained his MD from the University of Ottawa in 2001 and completed his residency training in Neuropathology at the University of Calgary in 2006. Since 2007, he has practised Neuropathology at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH). He is a Clinical Associate Professor, UBC. Of note, he acted as Program Director for the UBC Neuropathology Residency Training Program (2010-2014), and as Head of the Division Anatomical Pathology at BCCH (2013-2017). He is actively involved in oversight of the specialty of Neuropathology at a national level with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
Neuropathology is the study of disease of the central (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral (nerve and muscle) nervous systems primarily through gross, microscopic and molecular methods. Dr Dunham examines nervous system tissues removed at surgery (eg, brain tumors) and obtained at autopsy, the latter including cases involving trauma (so called “non-accidental injury”) and instances of sudden unexpected death.
During his time at BCCH Dr Dunham has completed nearly 2000 pediatric neuro-autopsies and handled 2000 pediatric neurosurgical specimens. He has performed numerous neuropathology post-mortem examinations for the BC Coroners Service and has testified as an expert witness before the BC Supreme Court and the Province of Alberta’s Court of Queen’s Bench.
Dr Dunham’s CV is available upon request.
